The Quake-Catcher Network is a collaborative initiative for developing the worlds largest, low-cost strong-motion seismic network by utilizing sensors in and attached to internet-connected computers.

  • Many laptops already have accelerometers inside of them
    • If you have a MacBook, iBook, or Powerbook (purchased 2005 or later), you can join our beta testing laptop network. Click here to learn how.
    • You will soon be able to download free software to turn your Thinkpad and HP laptops into a seismometer

  • Most desktops can be equipped with low-cost strong-motion sensors
    • You will soon be able to request a strong-motion sensor
    • Then download free software to turn your Desktop into a seismometer

    With your help, the Quake-Catcher Network has the potential to provide better understanding of earthquakes, give early warning to schools, emergency response systems, and others. The client-based software is also intended to be educational, with instructive material displaying the current seismic signal and/or recent earthquakes in the region.
