If you have a Mac laptop built in 2005 or later, then please follow these instructions:
First download & install the distributed computing software (BOINC) by clicking here.
Then in BOINC, add QCN to the "My Projects" list. First click "Add Project. Then type the following link into the "Project URL" text box: "http://qcn.stanford.edu/qcnalpha"
Once BOINC is setup, click on the "Advanced View" button.
Please input your computer location by clicking on the "Computer Location Info" button on the left.
This links you to an interactive Google API web site.
Input up to five of your favorite locations to use the laptop.
Select each radio button bottom left, and then click on where you are located. The better the location, the more useful the data will be! So zoom in all as much as you can and then select your house, appartment, or place of work.
Associate each location with an IP address when you are at that location by clicking "set current".
(Optional) Set your screen saver to "BOINC". Watch the small accelerations your laptop is experiencing in real time. (We know it is fun to bang on it, but please be careful)
- This software is intended to run only when the laptop is NOT used for 3 or more minutes. That way we do not measure your typing.
This software only runs properly when connected to the internet.
If there is a sizable earthquake in your area, when your laptop is running QCN, please let us know. We are still understaffed and the network is currently too small to detect most large earthquakes globally. Your assistance will greatly help us in the short term.
Please provide constructive feedback. We will not know if things dont work for you unless you tell us.
If you do NOT have a Mac laptop, please sign up for our contacts list. We'll contact you as we add Thinkpad and HP laptops as well as external USB sensors to the beta testing system.
